Donald Herbert Mumby was born November 17, 1939, in Lethbridge, Alberta, to parents who were both educators. He was raised in Crossfield, Alberta where he received his primary, elementary and high school education. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Calgary, Alberta on April 28, 1958 and served for thirty-five continuous years, retiring in May 1993 with the rank of Chief Superintendent. During his career he was seconded to the Department of External Affairs for a three year period. On return to the RCMP he was a delegate to the NATO Security Working Group in Brussels, Belgium for two years and was later responsible for overseeing RCMP Foreign Liaison activity in all countries abroad. He was Officer in Charge of the group which developed and maintained all communications and satellite services and programs used by the RCMP
across Canada. He is the recipient of the RCMP Long Service and Good Conduct Medal with Gold Clasp and Stars and the Canada 125 Medal which was awarded for community service and volunteer activity. He is graduate of Carleton University (BA, Political Science), the National Defence College, Kingston and the Canadian Police College Executive Development in Ottawa.
M.W .Bro. Mumby and his family are members of the Orleans United Church. He has served as a volunteer with the United Way of Ottawa-Carleton, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Kidney Foundation, the Victims Services Unit of the Ontario Provincial Police and Ottawa-Carleton Regional Police. He is a long time volunteer with the Queenswood Public School in Orleans. Each of these organizations will miss his contributions.
He is survived by his wife Marion (Anderson), a school teacher from Powassan, Ontario. He was father two children:
Ruth Ann Sullivan, who is a Certified Management Accountant and Dale, a Police Officer with the Peel
Regional Police Force. Don was the proud grandparents of Mark and Kathleen Sullivan and
Tyanna and Donald (Junior) Mumby.
Masonic Career
M.W .Bro. Mumby was initiated, passed and raised in Dalhousie 52, Ottawa,
where he served as Worshipful Master (1984-85).
He is a Charter Member of Luxor Daylight 741, Ottawa
and served as Worshipful Master(1994-95, and 2000-01).
He was a charter member of Millennium 743, Toronto which was formed in July 2000.
He was honorary member of several other lodges.
He was appointed Grand Steward (1987-88);
elected DDGM of Ottawa District 2 (1989-90);
appointed to the Board of General Purposes (1993-94) and
elected to the Board (1995-96, 1996-97 and 1999-2000) where he served on the Masonic Education,
Condition of Masonry, Communications, Blood Donors, Friend to Friend and Mentorship Committees, as well as the Management Committee.
He was appointed as Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of the State of Rhode Island and the Providence Plantations.
He was elected as Deputy Grand Master in July 2001 (2001-02 and 2002-03) and as
Grand Master in July 2003 (2003-04 and 2004-05).
He was member and Honorary Past First Principal of Carleton Chapter 16, Ottawa.
He was member of Ottawa Lodge of Perfection, Murray Chapter of Rose Croix and Ottawa Consistory, of which was Past Commander in Chief.
He received his 33rd Degree in September 2002 in St. John’s, NB.
He was member of Tunis Temple of the Shrine in Ottawa.
He was member of the Royal Order of Scotland.
